Performance appraisals are a part of work. They are a necessary part of employee development. Without evaluating an employee, you are not providing him with a measure of how well or how poorly he is doing. Employees should be promoted on merit, not simply on popularity.

Job Knowledge

The first section in a performance appraisal should be job knowledge. This measures the employee's ability to apply the rules, norms, techniques and standards of her job. It measures how well she understands the job and her technical ability. For example: "Teresa has displayed an average understanding and knowledge of her job as an insurance broker. Teresa has completed all of her work but makes common mistakes that displays a limited knowledge of the subject matter." This indicates that Teresa is an average employee. She has room to grow in her position.

Professional Competence

The professional competence section measures the employee's ability to meet deadlines, accomplish work with limited supervision and maintain composure under pressure. For example: "John has performed all of his tasks on time and with limited supervision. John maintains composure, professionalism and integrity under pressure. John has been scored as excellent for all of these measures."

Work Product and Problem Solving

The section on quality of work and problem-solving ability is the critical point in the performance appraisal. If you have a friendly and prompt employee who turns out poor work, then you have a problem. For example: "Mike's work product has been accurate, precise and without error. He has demonstrated the ability to analyze and solve complex issues and problems. He has performed well in crisis situations and has been scored excellent."
