Employee appraisals are typically performed yearly, and they can benefit both the employee and the employer. Employee appraisals help the employee to understand expectations and how to meet those expectations. They help employers by providing a means for relaying honest appraisals of performances and suggestions for improvement, which would benefit the employer. For a technical employee, there is the added aspect of technical expertise and knowledge that needs to be addressed during the appraisal process. Writing a technical employee appraisal can be a straightforward process by following a few simple steps.

Begin the appraisal by writing the basic information such as the name of the employee, the employee’s title and rank, the date of the appraisal and the name of the person writing the appraisal.
List the employee’s performance goals from the previous year. Include any specifics that are available from a job description. This helps everyone to understand what is expected. If this is the employee’s first appraisal, use the job description as a reference for performance expectations.
Write appraisals of the employee’s performance that are not of a technical nature. These aspects include qualities such as timeliness, work ethic, completing assignments on time, ability to work with others, exhibiting qualities that promote teamwork, leadership qualities and communication skills.
Include an appraisal section on technical ability. This can cover different aspects, depending on the position. Some examples of qualities that are subject to appraisal include the ability to solve problems, technical know-how, the ability to adapt to new technologies, incorporating new technical designs into a work flow and the ability to read technical documents.
Add a section on education and training. Technical jobs such as those in service and repair, engineering, technical help desks, biomedical testing, computer programming and information technology require up-to-date training because of how quickly technology evolves. For an employee who wants to consistently receive good appraisals, the employee needs to keep current with emerging technologies.
Save and print the appraisal. Set a date to go over the appraisal with the employee, allowing the employee to provide input at that time.
