Research and development (R&D) essentially is a collaborative effort. A start-up entrepreneur or a small-business owner could implement a combination of individual and group incentives to foster more group collaboration. In a Milken Family Foundation-sponsored research paper published on the University of Missouri website, researchers Lewis C. Solmon and Michael Podgursky found that performance-based pay actually led to competition rather than cooperation. Although their research was based in an educational setting, the lessons apply to start-up companies and the R&D departments of large companies. If scientists and engineers are competing with one another, there could be quality issues and schedule slippages, which would affect profitability. Therefore, companies should consider incorporating a portion of their compensation structures on the output of project teams.

Contractor Management

Small and large businesses often have to form partnerships to bid on projects or collaborate on joint product developments. These joint ventures could coordinate their human resource policies and set compensation schemes that reward managers and employees on the performance of entire groups. For example, if a group achieves various project milestones, all the team members could share equally in the bonus. Similarly, there could be bonuses based on performance standards for quality, sales and profits.

Considerations

Companies should avoid certain pitfalls when establishing performance standards, according to a human resources guide published by the University of St. Thomas. Managers should not have to micromanage employees if the individual and collaboration performance standards are clear. However, companies should continue to value individual contributions and recognize employees who go out of their way to help coworkers.
